Joanie Leeds, Moona Luna, Sugar Free Allstars and David Weinstone’s Music for Aardvarks concert previews
Four family concerts in April offer boisterous good times.
Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights
The local music teacher turns hummingbirds, sea cows and a possum (in a Phish cover) into stars on her latest, What a Zoo!
Coolest live antic Leeds straps herself into a theatrical harness and flutters high above the crowd to sing “My Butterfly.”
We hope to hear “If You Go,” a song about animal sounds (“hee-haw like a donkey”) and actions (“jiggle like a jellyfish”), with pounding drums and a rattling tambourine.
April 10 at the JCC Manhattan
Moona Luna
The bilingual Brooklyn quartet proves singer Sandra Velasquez’s theory that “whenever you have an accordion and a cowbell, there’s a celebration!”
Coolest live antic The band asks young audience members—and their imaginary pogo sticks—to hop up onstage for the closing number, “Brinca, Jump!”
We hope to hear “Todas Las Comidas (All the Foods),” a rumba that gastronomes and picky eaters will gobble up.
April 3 at Joe’s Pub
Sugar Free Allstars
Oklahoma City duo Chris “Boom” Wiser and Dr. Rock make their New York City debut with funk-heavy, beat-driven tunes centered around a sizzling-hot Hammond organ.
Coolest live antic During “The Train Beat Song,” the group’s high-energy grand finale, kids are instructed to “flap your arms like a bird” and “spin around and ’round.”
We hope to hear “SFA Disco Dance Party,” a boogie anthem for those still toting a sippy cup.
April 30 at Symphony Space
David Weinstone and Music for Aardvarks
NYC native Weinstone—creator of the Music for Aardvarks classes—and his five-piece band alternate between punk rock, bluegrass and jazz on their newest, All I Want!
Coolest live antic Children can bring their own instruments to play in their seats. Plus, every family gets a free CD.
We hope to hear Americana tune “Better Keep Your Eye On Me!” about mischievous kids.
April 30 at Highline Ballroom
