Brazilian Playground
Putumayo, $15.
The land of G-strings and cachaça gains an all-ages dimension on world-music label Putumayo’s latest compilation for kids, Brazilian Playground. Many of the lightly percussive songs here are classics of Brazilian popular music, from the simple greetings of Marissa’s “Alô…Alô” to Roberta Sá’s “Tum Tum Tum”—the sound of a heart quickening at the sight of a loved one.
Adults who discovered the country’s many forms of pop in nightclubs might be astonished at how well the sensual sounds of windswept bossa nova or jumpy percussion- and accordion-driven forró translate to the playroom. As the music snakes its way along like a Carnaval parade, children will get caught up in this celebration of the group pleasures of singing, marching, chanting and drumming.
If this is your first introduction to Putumayo’s brilliant albums for kids, make sure to check out the other Playground titles, covering everything from reggae and folk to international lullabies.
