NYC concerts for kids

Our writer and his six-year-old daughter, Julie, tout four February gigs for families.

By Jeff Bogle

Secret Agent 23 Skidoo
Sat Feb 6 at Symphony Space
You'll hear Kid-hop with tight beats, positive lyrics and a dash of bluegrass flavor delivered by a guy from Asheville, NC
Jeff says 23 Skidoo (otherwise known as Joel Sullivan) puts on one of the most infectious live kids' shows around. He's the real hip-hop deal.
Julie says I love his CD—every song is my favorite! But seeing him onstage was the best, especially when I got to scream “I Gotta Be Me!” into the microphone.

Hot Peas 'n Butter
Sat Feb 6 and Sun Feb 7 at Queens Theatre in the Park
You'll hear Sizzlin' multilingual, Latin-groove-inflected rock & roll
Jeff says The authentic, cross-cultural music is best appreciated by preschoolers—those still willing to shake it without any inhibition.
Julie says Listening to them makes me so happy. I especially love hearing lots of Spanish words that I'm learning in school.

Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could
Sun Feb 28 at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe Playhouse
You'll hear Straight-up, all-American rock & roll from a Long Island native and his six-piece band
Jeff says Brady and the Little Band That Could are the kid version of 1970s-vintage Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp circa “Pink Houses.”
Julie says Brady is so nice! You can hear his big smile in all his songs. I love slow-dancing with my Daddy to “One True You.”

Dirty Sock Funtime Band
Sun Feb 28 at the Jewish Museum
You'll hear A jam band whose music is as goofy and entertaining as its name
Jeff says Between the horns, the nonstop energy and the crazy dancing guy, this is the kindie circuit's Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
Julie says A Dirty Sock show is like the most funky birthday party ever—with super-dancey music!
