Museum for African Art
Museum Mile will get a bit longer later this year when the Museum for African Art, previously housed in Long Island City, opens in a 90,000-square-foot space near Central Park's north end. Look for a new theater and restaurant, a dramatic spiral staircase and a terrace on the roof. Kids will be so mesmerized by the museum’s collection of African masks, puppets and bronze heads that they won’t realize they’re getting a history lesson, too. 1280 Fifth Ave at 110th St (africanart.org)

The Museum of Mathematics (MoMath)
Tired of telling people that math isn’t boring, former professor and hedge-fund analyst Glen Whitney decided to show them instead: He quit his day job and founded the only mathematics museum in the U.S. When MoMath opens on the edge of Madison Square Park in late 2012, kids will be able to check out interactive exhibits that bring math to life, including logic puzzles, games like the Rubik’s Cube and a square-wheeled tricycle that rides as smoothly as one with round tires. 11 E 26th St between Fifth and Madison Aves (momath.org).
