Modern dance seems tailor-made for little ones with boundless energy and creativity. These classes give kids’ bodies, minds and imaginations a real workout by allowing tykes to express themselves through a range of movements.

Original music sets these classes apart. “Using a song as a structure is a much more child-appropriate way of setting timing than counting,” says Lasko. A pianist accompanies at each session, and kids can sing along as they dance. Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway at 95th St (212-864-3143, judylaskodance.com). 11-week semester $200–$220. Ages 3 to 15.

With downtown dance fixture Storme Sundberg at the helm, these classes fall on the avant-garde side of the spectrum. Kids communicate feelings by making shapes with their bodies. 1395 Lexington Ave at 92nd St (212-415-5500, 92y.org). 15–18 week semester $320–$370. Ages 6 to 16.—Jacqueline Burt
