How to get your NYC kid into showbiz
Your kid thinks his name should be in lights-and to your own surprise, you do too. But how to begin? Our guide explains it all.
There's a good chance you've overheard your child say, "Hey, I could do that," while watching Jaden Smith kick butt in The Karate Kid or Demi Lovato whip up sketch comedy in the Disney Channel's Sonny with a Chance. Good news: Dreams actually can come true in New York City, where acting courses expose youngsters to audition techniques; sitcoms and movies film in places like Bleecker Street; and agents and casting directors have offices all over town. If your child has the drive and you have the time, you can sample a nearly endless stream of diverse showbiz opportunities without leaving the tristate area. One warning from the outset: Remind kids that it's the rare little ham who will make it big and follow in the footsteps of Oscar nominees like Abigail Breslin, who calls the East Village home. Still, with the right help and the right resources, your babe can sure have fun trying. Break a leg!
