Asase Yaa Children's Arts Camp

Good deals don't come easy, but if you're willing to put in the time, you can find a great buy on summer camps. Before registering your child, be sure to ask if the program offers early-bird, sibling, multiple-week or refer-a-friend discounts. If you think your family might qualify, inquire about financial aid or sliding-scale tuition. Of course, you don't necessarily have to haggle; some camps are amazingly inexpensive or even free.

I'm curious to know what vetting process TONY kids goes through before recommending these camps- especially the "budget" options. I saw this recommendation and ended up signing my child up for Asase Yaa and was sorely disappointed. On the first day of camp, the children were welcomed into an unclean, cluttered, un-airconditioned classroom, with not enough chairs for all of the children to sit on. There was nothing in writing about the camp (except for a simple "trip schedule") given to parents (before or within the first days of camp)about schedules, camp policies, or anything like that. At one point when I asked a counselor what was happening that day, he shrugged and said "I don't know". Needless to say, my son was withdrawn from this camp and put in a safe, licensed program where the administration communicated with parents appropriately. Not surprisingly, the camp has been unwilling to give a partial refund even though their policy states that I am eligible for one. I'll never choose a "budget" option again where my child is concerned.

While this list is greatly appreciated, as a parent always seeking a good summer camp with an even better price tage, these camps are by no means "budget". There are various camps throughout the upper Manhattan area which provide completely free summer camp experiences to lower income families. Additonally, there are camps which provide full-time care to children for $350 or less (take the one hosted by St. Aloysius Catholic School in Harlem). Granted, parents must submit the appropriate paperwork, but TONYK could have done a little better research with this category. Not all of your readers fall into the "$800.00 is a steal bracket". Thanks!
