Tribeca: Shop talk

A dearth of toy stores in Tribeca prompted mom Karen Barwick (here with son Liam, 9) to open her own-Boomerang Toys-back in 2002.

Do you look to your own kids for inspiration?

Karen: Absolutely. When I first opened, I didn’t really know that much about toys. I went into my kids’ rooms and checked out what toys they liked playing with. Then I started calling the companies that made them.

Why Boomerang?

Karen: When Liam was little, he called himself “Blue Boomerang” and his younger brother “Shield Boomerang.” He suggested we call the store Boomerang Brothers, but we shortened it to Boomerang.

Do you feel like the luckiest kid in the world because your mom owns a toy store?

Liam: Yes! I get Ugly Dolls. All of the kids at school ask me for Ugly Dolls. They gave me money and I delivered them.

What do you want for Christmas?

Liam: The Batman Batcave Lego set.

What do you think will be popular for the holidays?

Karen: The 3-D Adventure Projector is really big with boys and girls. Anything Lego. We love to play board games, so I’ll probably get my boys the game Make ’n’ Break.
