Pa cast
While you’re playing sodoku on your commute to work, Jeremy Schneider is penning a monthly column and podcast. The Manhattan family therapist’s A Father’s Voice lets moms and dads in on his life with his twin five-year-olds, Elijah and Jordyn. We asked Schneider about what sparked the ’cast and why parents might want to tune in.
How did you come to create A Father’s Voice?
With the birth of my kids, I started to understand more about who I wanted to be, and I found that writing about it really helped me to be that person.
What topic in your podcast has drawn the most response?
The “Mommy, do it!” phase. It’s the toddler stage when all a child wants is his Mommy, particularly if she is the primary caretaker. Dads often write to me about their frustration. They want to be involved, yet they feel rejected by their own child.
Are there other fathering podcasts like yours?
Not many. This is the first generation of dads to have made an obvious commitment to being involved. They are blazing their own parental trail, and they welcome any chance to hear how someone else is doing it.
Is it weird that strangers know so much about your kids?
I definitely feel mixed about it, but I hope that my experience can be helpful to other dads, and to moms trying to understand their partner’s experience. It will be a harder balance as my kids get older, but we’ll see how that plays out.
