Things to do with kids over the mid-winter break
Great ways to keep kids entertained in NYC.
These four city museums host special events and programs during the public school’s weeklong February vacation (February 20–24).
Intrepid Kids Week
The West Side vessel sponsors nine days of kid-friendly activities. While the exact schedule wasn’t set as of press time, last year’s event included Broadway performances and sketches by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. While on board, make sure to check out the Exploreum—a 13,000 square-foot exhibit on the Hangar Deck that teaches kids about the history of the ship. Kids Week runs Feb 18–26. Staten Island Children’s Museum
The SI institution opens its doors two hours early every day during the break (10am instead of noon) and offers free admission on February 20. That day, in honor of African-American History Month, kids learn about Sandy Ground, a community founded by freed slaves in the 19th century on Staten Island’s South Shore (noon–2pm). 1000 Richmond Terr at Snug Harbor Rd, Staten Island (718-273-2060, statenislandkids.org). $6, children under 1 free.
New York Hall of Science
Engineers-in-the-making learn the ins and outs of the profession on Engineering Day. Volunteers from the American Society of Civil Engineers show kids how to build boats, make gumdrop structures and create towers. They can also watch a video that explains the process of bridge building. New York Transit Museum
Kids listen to a special subway-themed storytelling (Feb 21–24 at 11am) or imagine and then build their own city (Feb 21–24 at 2:30pm). Before heading out, stop at the “ElectriCity: Powering New York’s Subways and Rails” exhibit. There kids can operate a model train with a hand-cranked motor or capture energy with a solar panel.
