How to enjoy the Super Bowl with NYC Kids
Five ways to cheer on the Giants with NYC's youngest fans.
New York City’s gone bananas over the Super Bowl this year, with the Giants having made their way to the front line. Although the big game will be held in Indianapolis on Sunday, February 5, we found five great ways for families to enjoy the show from the Giants’ home base.
Play some family football
Families looking to get ready for the big game will find a number of football fields at their disposal before the clock strikes 6:30pm on Sunday. Manhattan crews can throw around the ol’ pigskin in De Witt Clinton Park or hop a bus to Randalls Island Park. North Brooklynites should make the trek to McCarren Park or search out some wide-open spaces in Prospect Park, while Queens residents can team up in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. Visit nycgovparks.org/facilities/football to find more football facilities in your nabe.
Grab a snack
While Super Bowl Sunday may inspire visions of chips and dip, pigs in blankets, bowls of pretzels and other such all-American eats, trade savory in for sweet at City Bakery—February is their “Hot Chocolate Month,” when they serve a new, special flavored hot chocolate each day of the month. Parents will flip for the Super Bowl–flavored drink, which, not surprisingly, is called Super Bowl hot chocolate and is made with two types of beer, one from each Super Bowl city. Don’t worry—all traces of alcohol have been cooked out of the beverage. More cautious kids will do just fine with City Bakery’s traditional, ultra-thick hot chocolate.
Check out the Scholastic Store's
Little fans can get pumped for the big day by getting competitive with a few games of finger football and munching on kid-appropriate tailgate fare before the real tournament begins the following day. Sat Feb 4 at 3pm. Scholastic Store. Free.
Watch the Puppy Bowl
It wouldn’t be Super Bowl Sunday without a few hours of watching some downright adorable furry friends "playing" football on national television. Tune into Animal Planet’s annual “Puppy Bowl VIII” at 3pm…but good luck getting anyone to change the channel.
Go to the Moxie Spot
Parents who are loath to get cheese dip all over the furniture should consider outsourcing their Super Bowl celebrations at The Moxie Spot, Brooklyn's family-friendly clubhouse. The eatery will be showing the game with sound, and plans to stay open until the game ends and the Giants win (duh!). Tots with a short attention span can even participate in Moxie's bingo game (6–7:30pm) while parents keep their eyes glued to the screen.
