Children's Museum of the Arts announces groundbreaking of new museum site

The Children's Museum of the Arts has announced plans for a brand-new, 10,000-square-foot facility, slated to open in the fall of 2011 in downtown Manhattan. The Soho institution is dedicated to teaching children about the arts, and also displaying works made by kids, a focus that will be expanded in the new space with a 2,000-square-foot gallery for rotating exhibitions. The inaugural exhibit will feature works from the likes of Swoon, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, and Keith Haring—all supporters of public art. Plus, a new media lab equipped with swanky features like a sound station, clay bar, and gadgets for creating videos and animation will update the museum's popular media classes and camps for kids. CMA officially breaks ground on the new site on April 19, and will be hosting a lineup of fund-raising events throughout the spring. Mark your calendar for their May 22 festival at Webster Hall, hosted by Adam Horowitz of the Beastie Boys! Check out cmany.org/campaign for a full lineup and more information about the project.
