Sony Wonder Technology Lab's "Music Mixer" exhibit is now open

Thanks to the Sony Wonder Technology Lab, tots no longer have to wait until they're old enough to club-hop in the LES to test their DJ skills. The midtown marvel’s newest exhibit, "Music Maker," puts kids in the producer’s chair as they mix (and remix) Alicia Keys’s ode to the city in “Empire State of Mind.” Kids gather round a large, futuristic touch-screen table as Keys delivers superstar instructions. With one hand on the “instrument audio block” and the other on the “effects audio block,” they can choose the instrument, genre and effect for different parts of the song. Want to add some reverb-heavy sitar? Go ahead. Smooth jazz at a low volume? Sure. Young techies will be enraptured by the wonders of the touch screen: One finger is all it takes to drag different shapes (representing pieces of the song) into kids' personal “mixing zone.” When they’re finished, the final track will play back with the changes they’ve made. Who knows? Maybe it’ll be the next Grammy-winning hit. "Music Mixer" is at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab, 550 Madison Ave at 56th St (212-883-8100, sonywondertechlab.com). Free.
